Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy made a brief stop in Ireland on Thursday, where he met with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin at Shannon Airport before heading to Washington for high-stakes talks with U.
S. President Donald Trump.
According to DAILY POST, Trump confirmed that Zelenskiy would visit Washington on Friday to finalize a deal on rare earth minerals. However, the Ukrainian leader emphasized that the agreement's success depends on the outcome of discussions and continued U.S. support for Ukraine.
During their meeting, Zelenskiy expressed gratitude to both the Irish prime minister and the Irish people for their unwavering support and for providing refuge to Ukrainians who fled Russia’s 2022 invasion.
Martin described their conversation as warm and productive, highlighting their discussions on French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Washington and Europe’s essential role in any future peace settlement.
“I think he has a very clear vision of where he wants to take this. He highly values the strong partnership and support Ukraine has received from the United States," Martin said. "President Zelenskiy is particularly focused on ensuring Europe plays a central role in any potential peace agreement moving forward.”
With crucial diplomatic talks ahead, all eyes are now on Washington as Zelenskiy seeks to secure ongoing U.S. backing in Ukraine’s fight for sovereignty.
