Lionel Messi’s fifth-place finish in this year’s Ballon d’Or vote was absurd, his FC Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde said of the Spanish champions’ Argentina forward on Tuesday.

Real Madrid’s Croatia midfielder Luka Modric took the prize Monday in Paris after winning the UEFA Champions League and being named the tournament’s player at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The 33-year-old’s triumph ended Messi’s and Cristiano Ronaldo’s decade-long reign, with the Juventus’ Portugal striker finishing second and Messi fifth in a vote by 180 journalists.

“I will not get into discussing the inconsistencies of the prize,” Valverde told reporters.

“We congratulate Modric for winning the Ballon d’Or but Messi being in fifth place is absurd.”

Messi, a five-time Ballon d’Or winner, led Barca to a La Liga-Copa del Rey double last season but Argentina went out of the World Cup in the last 16 to eventual champions France.

The Barca No. 10 also won a record fifth European Golden Shoe after finishing with 34 top-flight goals last season.

Modric got 753 points followed by Ronaldo on 476, Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann with 414 and Paris St-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe was fourth with 347, ahead of Messi on 280.

FC Barcelona host Cultural Leonesa on Wednesday in the second leg of their Copa del Rey round of 32 tie, in which they hold a 1-0 advantage.

However, Messi is not expected to feature.

Due to the club discouraging performance in the league from the beginning of the 2018/19 season, the Premier League club Fulham have sacked manager Slavisa Jokanovic and concomitantly appointed Claudio Ranieri as the replacement.

The Cottagers find themselves bottom of the table with just five points from 12 games and a negative goal difference of 20.

The abysmal form after gaining promotion has now led to the exit of Slavisa Jokanovic. The club has moved swiftly to rope in a replacement in Claudio Ranieri. The Italian is famous for leading Leicester City to a fairytale Premier League triumph in 2016.

He left the Foxes after a below-par start to the subsequent campaign and was in charge of Ligue 1 outfit Nantes last season. The 67-year-old has been given a multi-year contract at Fulham.

The Real Madrid board of management has decided to permanent the  interim coach, Santiago Solari and the new coach will now become the club’s permanent coach until the end of the season.

The 42-year-old Argentine has led the team to four wins in four games since replacing Julen Lopetegui at the helm of the European champions two weeks ago.

It is instructive to know that the Spanish rules prevent an interim coach from staying in charge for longer than 15 days, which expire on Monday, without being appointed on a permanent basis. The Spanish Football Association, RFEF, told news agency  that Madrid had filed papers to hire Solari on that basis.

Solari has enjoyed the best start of any manager in the club’s history with victories over Melilla, Viktoria Plzen, Real Valladolid and Celta Vigo. Lopetegui was sacked after a poor run of form that saw Madrid sink to ninth in the table. After Sunday’s 4-2 win at Celta, the capital club are currently sixth, four points behind league leaders, Barcelona.
