In a show of discontent, the staff of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Ondo State, took to the streets on Wednesday to protest against the protracted issue of unpaid salaries and allowances.

The aggrieved workers, united under the banner of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions and the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics (RUGIPO chapters), blocked the main entrance of the institution to draw attention to their grievances.

With leaves in their hands, the protesters voiced their concerns through various solidarity songs, expressing their frustration with both the school and the state government. The focal point of their demand was the immediate payment of outstanding salaries, which have accumulated over a period of 10 months. Additionally, they urged the state government to implement the N35,000 wage award for polytechnic workers, aligning with the directives issued by the Federal Government.

Addressing the situation, Comrade Nafiu Okoro, Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics (SSANIP), highlighted the detrimental effects of irregular salary payments on the union's members. He pointed out that the inconsistency in salary disbursement had contributed to untimely deaths among polytechnic workers, emphasizing the urgent need for resolution.

The protest serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by dedicated educational workers and the impact of delayed payments on their livelihoods. As the staff of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic continue to demand their rights, the spotlight is on the state government to address these pressing issues and ensure a fair and timely remuneration for the hardworking individuals contributing to the institution's success.
