The Federal Government has announced the renaming of the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University in honor of Nigeria's former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, who recently celebrated his 90th birthday.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed the decision on Monday during a press briefing at the State House, following a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Idris explained that the renaming recognizes General Gowon’s significant contributions to Nigeria’s unity and development. As a symbol of the government's commitment to celebrating national icons, the proposal for the name change will be forwarded to the National Assembly for formal approval.
The renaming comes as a tribute to General Gowon’s enduring legacy and highlights the government’s efforts to preserve the memory of leaders who have played pivotal roles in shaping Nigeria’s history.
