Onfroy adopted the moniker XXXTentacion, after he uploaded his first official song, and he has been known by the name since then. XXXTentacion had been to juvenile detention different times due to his way of life and received hate from people because of this. He was released from prison on April 18, 2017. Onfroy lived in Florida. He lived with rapper Denzel Curry in the past.

In February 2018, Onfroy posted on social media that he was preparing to head back into education and went onto announce in March 2018 that he was going to a community college to get his GED. Onfroy was very public about his battle and struggle with depression.Onfroy was reportedly leaving a motorcycle dealership in Deerfield Beach on June 18, 2018, when he was shot by two assailants in a dark colored SUV in an apparent robbery. Witnesses told police the suspects took a Louis Vuitton bag from Onfroy’s vehicle. The suspects fled the scene.The Broward County Fire Department rushed Onfroy to Broward Health North .Initially reported to be in critical condition following the shooting, the Broward County Sheriff's Office later confirmed Onfroy's death.
