In the film Alina Of Cuba, which Miguel Bardem directed, Ana Villafae plays Alina Fernandez, the daughter of Castro and Natalia "Naty" Revuelta (Mia Maestro), who had an affair.
At the age of 10, Fernandez learned Castro was her biological father. She eventually rose to prominence as one of Castro's most vocal detractors and endured a string of detentions for attempting to flee the country. She fled to Spain in 1993 while using fake documents and a wig.
Alanna de la Rosa, Maria Cecilia Botero, Harding Junior, and Cuban-born actors Sian Chiong and Rafael Ernesto Hernandez make up the supporting cast. On August 15, on-location filming is scheduled to start in and around Cartagena and Bogota.
The universe worked together to find and persuade James Franco to play Castro, according to John Martinez O'Felan, lead creative producer at Mankind Entertainment, in a statement explaining the choice of Franco. "Our director's original order was to find an actor who holds a close physical resemblance to the real Castro to build from, along with finding someone Alina Fernandez would strongly endo," he said.
