According to Rolling Stone, Bruce Jackson's 1974 toast-themed book Get Your Ass In The Water And Swim Like Me included the poem Hobo.
Slim Wilson, a character in the story, also sang the poem's lyrics, which begin, "Ladies of culture and beauty so refined, is there one of you who would grant me wine?" I know I look ragged, but I don't smell. God bless the lady who will buy me a drink. With a laugh, heavy-hipped Hattie turned to Nadine and said, "That funky motherfucker really needs a bath, child."
Several lines from the poem are allegedly used in Depp and Beck's song "Sad Motherfuckin' Parade," including "I'm raggedy, I know, but I have no stink," "God bless the lady that'll buy me a drink," and "What that funky motherfucker really needs, child, is a bath."
Jackson claims that he hasn’t been credited by Depp or Beck.
“The only two lines I could find in the whole piece that [Depp and Beck] contributed are "Big time motherfucker" and "Bust it down to my level." Everything else is from Slim’s performance in my book,” Jackson told Rolling Stone.
