The South African government has confirmed the arrest of Anabela Rungo, mother of Miss Universe Nigeria, Chidimma Adetshina, over allegations of fraudulently obtaining a South African identity document.
According to a statement released on Saturday, officials from the Department of Home Affairs, in collaboration with the South African Police Service (SAPS), apprehended Rungo at a hideout in Cape Town during a coordinated operation.
Declared Persona Non Grata in 2024
Siya Qoza, spokesperson for the Department of Home Affairs, revealed that Rungo, a Mozambican national, had been declared persona non grata in September 2024 after authorities uncovered irregularities in her residency status.
“Investigators from the department, assisted by SAPS, detained Anabela Rungo at a property in Cape Town. The Department withdrew Rungo’s South African documentation in September 2024 after finding that it had been fraudulently obtained, rendering her ineligible to continue residing in South Africa,” said Qoza.
Chidimma Adetshina’s Miss SA Pageant Controversy
This development follows the controversy surrounding Rungo’s daughter, Chidimma Adetshina, who withdrew from the Miss South Africa pageant after questions arose regarding her nationality and allegations of identity fraud involving her mother.
