Tragedy struck during a Catholic mass at Mindanao State University in Marawi, southern Philippines, as an explosion rocked the university gymnasium, claiming the lives of four individuals and leaving numerous others injured.

The incident unfolded on a Sunday, prompting authorities to initiate a thorough investigation into the cause of the blast.

Brig Gen Allan Nobleza, the regional police director, addressed reporters, stating, "We're investigating if it's an IED [improvised explosive device] or grenade throwing." Maj. Gen. Gabriel Viray III, the regional military commander, confirmed at least four fatalities, including three women, with 50 individuals receiving treatment at two hospitals for predominantly minor injuries.

The aftermath of the explosion led to a scene of chaos and panic, with worshippers left in shock. Taha Mandangan, the security chief of the university campus, described the victims as bloodied and scattered on the ground. Two of the wounded were reported to be in critical condition, underscoring the severity of the incident.

Mandangan unequivocally labeled the event as an act of terrorism, emphasizing, "This is clearly an act of terrorism. It's not a simple feud between two people. A bomb will kill everybody around." As investigations unfold, the community grapples with the repercussions of this tragic and senseless act.
