Tech billionaire Elon Musk has urged German citizens to vote for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in the February 23, 2025 general election.
Musk, who now serves as an adviser to former U.S. President Donald Trump, made the endorsement in a video reposted on his official X account.
Musk: AfD Could Shape Europe’s Future
Describing AfD as a populist and anti-immigration party, Musk suggested that the outcome of Germany’s election could have a global impact.
"This election could decide the fate of Europe, maybe even the fate of the world," he stated, while urging Germans to support AfD at the polls.
On election day, Musk further solidified his stance by pinning an AfD-related post on his X profile.
German Government and Macron Accuse Musk of Election Interference
Musk's endorsement has stirred controversy, as both the German government and French President Emmanuel Macron have accused him of meddling in European politics.
In January 2025, Macron directly called out Musk for intervening in Germany’s elections through his social media platform, X. Similarly, in December 2024, German authorities criticized Musk for allegedly attempting to influence voters.
SPD Struggles as AfD Gains Momentum
Polls indicate that Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) is struggling to gain voter support, while AfD, along with the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its Bavarian ally, the Christian Social Union (CSU), remain major contenders.
With Musk’s high-profile backing of AfD, the 2025 German election is shaping up to be one of the most intense and globally scrutinized in recent history.
