Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, a prominent figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC) and representative of Ondo South in Nigeria's 10th National Assembly, has called on newly inaugurated U.
S. President Donald Trump to engage in diplomatic discussions with Nigerian President Bola Tinubu.
Ibrahim believes this partnership is crucial to boosting American influence in Africa and countering China’s rapidly expanding economic dominance on the continent.
In an interview on Channels Television's Sunday Politics, Ibrahim highlighted the rising power of BRICS+, an economic alliance that is increasingly shaped by China’s influence. The group, now consisting of 10 member nations, has reportedly approached Nigeria to explore economic cooperation, particularly in trading with China’s currency, the Yuan.
Ibrahim pointed out China’s strategic efforts to cement its position as Africa’s leading economic superpower, largely through loans and infrastructure investments, which have given it significant leverage across the continent. He emphasized the need for the U.S. to act swiftly and engage with influential African leaders like President Tinubu to maintain its geopolitical relevance in the region.
The senator also raised concerns about China’s long-term objectives in Africa, questioning whether Beijing’s financial support for major infrastructure projects like airports and seaports is simply about trade or a broader strategy to gain greater control over Africa’s economic future.
This growing tension between U.S. and Chinese influence in Africa is a critical issue that could reshape the continent's economic landscape in the coming years.
