At Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, two people lost their lives after a Delta airplane tire exploded while it was being changed.
The fatal incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday morning in the maintenance area of the airport, which is home to Delta's global headquarters.
The victims included a Delta employee and a contractor, both of whom were killed at the scene. A third individual suffered serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital for treatment. The explosion happened just after 5 a.m., shaking the Delta TechOps team and the wider airport community.
The Boeing 757 involved in the accident had arrived in Atlanta from Las Vegas on Sunday night, following a busy day of short-haul flights between Tampa, Atlanta, and Las Vegas. The aircraft was undergoing maintenance at Delta TechOps, which handles the airline's fleet of planes. Delta’s Atlanta facility is crucial to the company’s operations, servicing over 200 routes globally.
This incident is the second serious occurrence for Delta in recent months. Just earlier this year, another Delta Boeing lost its nose wheel while attempting to take off from the same airport. While these incidents are rare, they have understandably raised concerns within the airline’s technical operations team.
John Laughter, President and Chief of Operations for Delta TechOps, addressed the tragedy in a heartfelt message to staff, expressing sorrow and offering support. "I’m deeply saddened to share that three TechOps team members were involved in an accident... Please know your safety and wellbeing comes first – always, and that your leaders are here for you. We’re all in this together, and we’ll get through this by supporting each other," Laughter said.
