In a generous gesture, President Bola Tinubu has bestowed national honours upon every member of the Super Eagles squad that clinched the silver medal at the recent Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d'Ivoire.

The President, not only recognizing their efforts on the pitch but also their contribution to the nation, has further granted each player a plot of land in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and a flat.

Despite the Eagles' commendable journey to secure what would have been the country's fourth AFCON title, the final against Cote d'Ivoire ended in a 2-1 defeat on Sunday. William Troost-Ekong's powerful header gave Nigeria an initial lead in the first half, but Franck Kessie and Sebastien Haller secured victory for the Ivorians in the second half.

In a reception held at the presidential villa in Abuja on Tuesday, Tinubu, while honoring the silver medal-winning squad, conferred upon each player the prestigious Member of the Order of Niger (MON). During the ceremony, Tinubu lauded the team for their resilience, sportsmanship, and unwavering can-do attitude.

Expressing gratitude to the players for uplifting the nation's spirit through their performance at AFCON, Tinubu emphasized the significance of their contribution to Nigerian football. Following the ceremony, Nyesome Wike, the Minister of FCT, presented the team members with forms, initiating the process for them to claim their well-deserved gifts of lands and apartments.

This acknowledgment and reward not only recognize the players' dedication but also reflect the nation's appreciation for their hard work and commitment on the international stage. The Super Eagles, despite falling short in the final, have secured a place of honor and recognition in the eyes of the Nigerian president and the entire nation.
