Abia State Governor, Dr.
Alex Otti, OFR, has expressed his strong support for the Nigerian Air Force's (NAF) decision to establish an operational base in the state. He assured that the state would provide all necessary assistance to facilitate the base's establishment and operations.
Governor Otti highlighted the timely nature of the Air Force's decision, coinciding with the Federal Government's plans to build an airstrip in Abia. He emphasized the increasing necessity of the Air Force's presence due to recent security concerns, referencing an incident where unidentified gunmen killed five soldiers at an army post in Obikabia, Obingwa Local Government Area.
The Governor made these remarks on Friday during a visit from the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, at his country home in Umuehim, Nvosi, Isialangwa South Local Government Area.
"We are particularly grateful for the Air Force's decision to establish a presence in Abia State," Governor Otti said. "This initiative couldn't have come at a better time. The Federal Government has approved an airstrip in Abia, and we've had productive engagements with the Ministry of Aviation, the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, NAMA, and other relevant authorities."
Governor Otti revealed that a large site has already been allocated for the airport and expressed the state's commitment to expanding the airstrip into a full-fledged airport. "This is a great time for Abia. With the airport project underway, we will also provide land for the Air Force operations."
In a further demonstration of his commitment to facilitating the Air Force's establishment in Abia, Governor Otti offered a temporary location in Umuahia for the Air Force to commence operations while the permanent site is under construction.
