In a move to preserve the integrity of traditional institutions, the Anambra State Government has announced the suspension of HRH Igwe Damian O.

Ezeani, the traditional ruler of Neni Town. The suspension comes as a result of Igwe Ezeani's breach of the official Code of Conduct that governs traditional rulers in the state.

The State Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Community Affairs, Mr. Tonycollins Nwabunwanne, took decisive action by signing a circular outlining the grounds for Igwe Ezeani’s suspension. The traditional ruler allegedly conferred a chieftaincy title upon Senator Ifeanyi Ubah without following the established protocol, which requires obtaining permission from the traditional ruler of the recipient’s community and clearance from the ministry.

The Code of Conduct for Traditional Rulers in Anambra, upheld by the traditional rulers themselves, explicitly prohibits rulers from conferring chieftaincy titles on individuals from outside their jurisdiction without the necessary permissions. This regulation aims to prevent the misuse of such titles and uphold the dignity of the traditional institutions.

The commissioner emphasized that a minority of traditional rulers have been observed engaging in the practice of exchanging chieftaincy titles for monetary gains. This practice has not only violated established protocols but has also brought embarrassment and disrepute to the esteemed traditional institution.

The Anambra State Government's swift action in suspending Igwe Ezeani sends a clear message about the commitment to maintaining the sanctity and honor of traditional institutions. This move underscores the importance of upholding established codes of conduct to ensure the proper functioning and respect for traditional rulership in the state.
