Dr.
Ogbonnaya Onu, an aspirant for the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidacy in the 2023 election, has passed away.
He was a significant figure in Nigerian politics, serving as the first civilian governor of Abia State. Reports indicate that Onu breathed his last in Abuja on Thursday, although details surrounding his demise remain unclear.
The APC stalwart had been contending with an undisclosed illness prior to his passing.
Dr. Onu made headlines during the APC primary election in 2022, where he vocalized grievances of injustice against the Southeast region.
Notably, he resigned from his role as Minister of Science and Technology in May 2022 to pursue his presidential ambitions within the APC, ultimately losing to President Bola Tinubu.
Formerly appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari in November 2015, Onu's tenure in the Ministry of Science and Technology spanned several years before his foray into presidential politics.
His demise marks the end of a prominent political career, leaving behind a legacy of service and advocacy.
