PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari was amongeminent Nigerians, who mourned the late elderstatesman and chieftain of pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, Sir OlaniwunAjayi, who died yesterday.




Other Nigerians, who mourned the latenationalist were Lagos State governor, Mr.Akinwumi Ambode, Ogun State governor, SenIbikunle Amosun, former Ogun State governor,

Mr. Gbenga Daniel and Senator Gbenga Kaka.Saturday Vanguard learnt that the deceased, whohailed from Isara Remo in Remo North LocalGovernment Area of Ogun State had complainedof pains on Thursday afternoon and was taken toLagos by his eldest son, Dr. Konyin Ajayi, wherehe died.

A condolence register had been opened at hisIsara-Remo country home.President Buhari in his tribute described thedeceased as a patriot, who tenaciously workedfor the unity and prosperity of Nigeria.

The President in a statement by his SpecialAdviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. FemiAdesina, said: The President commiserates withthe government and people of Ogun State on thedemise of their illustrious son, author, legalpractitioner, elder statesman and nationalist.The president also paid tribute to Pa Ajayisinspirational and dedicated work to entrench andstrengthen democracy in Nigeria through hispassionate engagements in Afenifere, theNational Democratic Coalition ,NADECO, and thePatriots.

Ajayi must have been guided by late ChiefObafemi Awolowos principle. The late reveredYoruba leader effectively combined his sharpcommentary on the state of affairs in Nigeriawith uncommon patriotism while workingtenaciously to further unity, development, andprosperity in the nation.

I urge all who mourn Pa Ajayi to emulate hislifelong commitment to dialogue, democracy, anddevelopment, which are key ingredients fornational growth.

Ambode in a statement by his Chief PressSecretary, Mr. Habib Aruna, said the late Ajayiwas a frontline politician who was passionateabout the progress of the Yoruba nation andNigeria.

He said: Papa was one of the few survivingclose associates of the late sage, Chief ObafemiAwolowo. After Chief Awolowos death, he was aconsistent advocate for the struggle to seeNigeria achieve the dreams of her foundingfathers.He was very passionate about theprogress of Nigeria, he was an intellectual geniuswho had enthusiasm for the development of hisimmediate community and the country at largeAmosun described the late Ajayi as one of theicons of Ogun State and one of the architects ofmodern Nigeria.On his part, Daniel said: late Sir Ajayi was avery strong force in Nigerian polity and wellrespected in the political landscape over theyears as he improved on the democratic idealsof the founding fathers and played his roles inthe service to the nation in various capacities.Kaka in his condolence message described Ajayias a consummate Awoist, political mentor touncountable, legal icon, epitome of good morals,neatness personified, educationist, acommunicator per excellence, spiritual developerin his area of influence, passionate up holder ofour cultural values, peace maker with noboundary and outstanding lover of his family,community and nation.
