The death toll resulting from the tragic Gezawa Mosque attack in Kano State has tragically risen to eight, with 17 others remaining in critical condition and undergoing treatment.

According to reports from Naijacrawl, seven additional victims succumbed to their injuries while being treated at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital in Kano, a confirmation provided by the police.

SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Police Command, verified the number of casualties, further stating that 17 individuals are currently receiving medical attention at the hospital.

Kiyawa emphasized that the victims lost their lives due to the severe injuries sustained during the distressing incident.

The root cause of the attack stems from a family dispute over inheritance sharing, which led the principal suspect, 38-year-old Shafiu Abubakar, to deliberately set the mosque ablaze.

Sources within the Larabar-Albasawa village revealed that Shafiu allegedly doused the mosque area with petroleum, locked the doors, and ignited the fire, trapping approximately 40 worshippers inside.

It was noted that nearly every household in the village had a family member among the affected 40 individuals.

The police spokesperson reiterated that 17 victims are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Earlier in the week, AIG Umar Mamman Sanda led a delegation of security personnel, including the State Commissioner of Police and the Director of DSS, in a visit to the victims at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital.
