In the early hours of Saturday, officials from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) launched a series of raids on lounges and event centers in the Alagbaka area of Akure, the capital of Ondo State.

According to SaharaReporters, the operation resulted in the arrest of over 50 individuals suspected of being internet fraudsters, commonly referred to as "yahoo boys."

Among those detained was a groom-to-be, who was celebrating his bachelor's eve with friends at one of the clubs. Witnesses reported that EFCC operatives arrived in multiple vehicles around 1 am, discharging firearms into the air to assert control.

During the raids, the EFCC seized numerous vehicles, laptops, high-end phones, and other items. Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes where agents forcibly entered nightclubs and lounges, using tear gas and physical force to detain individuals. Two soldiers were reportedly injured when tear gas canisters were deployed inside one of the venues.

"It was a nightmare," a witness recounted. "They were entering the nightclubs and lounges, tear-gassing people, beating them up, and arresting them indiscriminately. They didn't care who you were. Even a groom and his friends celebrating a bachelor party were profiled as internet fraudsters and taken away."
