The United States of Biafra (USB), a separatist group led by Simon Ekpa, has formally petitioned Nigerian President Bola Tinubu for official recognition.
In a letter signed by Dr. Ngozi Orabueze, the group's Acting Head of State and Deputy Prime Minister, the USB declared its sovereignty, citing a significant referendum held in Finland where over 50 million people allegedly voted in favor of restoring Biafraās independence.
According to the letter, the landmark decision was finalized at a global convention in Lahti, Finland, on November 29, 2024. During this gathering, pro-Biafra supporters reaffirmed the original 1967 declaration of independence, renaming their self-proclaimed nation the United States of Biafra. The group claims to have established a 40-state structure, solidifying its vision of a sovereign entity.
The USB argues its legitimacy based on the 1933 Montevideo Convention on the Rights and Duties of States, which outlines the fundamental criteria for statehood.
These include:
ā A defined population
ā A functioning government
ā Territorial control
ā Capacity for foreign relations
The group asserts that it has successfully met these conditions, thereby securing the right to self-determination and independence under international law.
As tensions rise, all eyes are now on President Tinubu and the Nigerian governmentās response to this bold demand for sovereignty. Will the world recognize the United States of Biafra? Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
