Following the industrial action embarked upon by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) today, Monday, June 3rd, 2024, concerns have been raised about the timing and its adverse effects on Muslims preparing for Id al-Kabiir (Salah), which is just a few days away.
Prof. Isaq of the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) voiced these concerns, highlighting the potential difficulties the strike will create for Muslims during this festive period.
Prof. Isaq questioned the NLC's consideration for Muslims during this significant festival, noting, "What does the NLC think will happen to Muslims whose festival of Id al-Kabiir is already knocking on the door? Transport fare to and from their various destinations will skyrocket. Movements will be so adversely affected that the whole Salah period will become a horrendous experience. Is that what the NLC wants?"
He criticized the NLC for the short notice of the strike, stating that it was given with less than 48 hours' notice, directly from the negotiation table. He described the approach of the current NLC leadership as "aggressive, arrogant, fascist, and partisan," suggesting that their actions are aimed at destabilizing the government. "This NLC has no respect for the rule of law, not even an iota of decorum for democratic practices," he added.
Prof. Isaq emphasized the impact of the strike on Nigerian Muslims, questioning if the action is a deliberate attempt to make life uncomfortable for them. He also raised concerns about whether the NLC would have declared a strike so close to Christmas or if this was an attempt to undermine the current Muslim-Muslim government leadership. "Are Muslim workers not part of your union? If we are, shouldn’t NLC consider our interest, particularly our fast-approaching festival, before embarking on a strike?" he asked.
He also criticized the lack of strategic planning, timing, and logistical consideration by the NLC, pointing out that any civilized group would check the calendar when planning an event, noting that festivals are clearly marked. "Is there no calendar on the walls of the NLC office, or was it deliberately ignored because NLC leadership is more interested in inflicting pain on Nigerian Muslims?" Prof. Isaq questioned.
