The Labour Party (LP) has responded to the recent resignation of Dr.

Doyin Okupe, a former Presidential spokesman to ex-presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan. In a letter dated January 8, 2024, Okupe announced his departure from the party, citing ideological differences.

The National Publicity Secretary of the LP, Mr. Obiora Ifoh, shared insights with Daily Trust on Monday, emphasizing that Dr. Okupe has always been aligned with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

"We received the letter from Dr. Doyin Okupe, tendering his resignation as a member of the Labour Party. We wish him well in his pursuit of his political career. After a short time in December 2022, when he had to leave the campaign due to legal issues, we thank him for his contributions as the chairman of the DG of the campaign," stated Ifoh.

He further clarified the reason for Okupe's departure, noting, "He is saying that he is leaving because he is a Liberal Democrat, while the Labour Party is a Social Democrat. It is a good thing because he is not expected to be in a territory where his ideological bent will be confused or different. He has always been a PDP man, so the Labour Party expects that he will return to anywhere he wants to be."

Ifoh expressed gratitude for Okupe's contributions during his tenure with the party and wished him success in his future political endeavors. While the LP had seen the resignation letter on social media, they await its official reception.

As a quick recap, Okupe's resignation as the Director General (DG) of the LP's Presidential Campaign Council followed a money laundering conviction by a Federal High Court in Abuja. The conviction stemmed from his acceptance of over N200 million cash from former National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki. Okupe paid a sum of N13 million following the court's decision.
