In a harrowing case, a 65-year-old landlord, Igwe Ambrose, has been handed a double life imprisonment sentence by the Ikeja sexual offences and domestic violence court in Lagos.
The elderly man was found guilty of committing disturbing acts, specifically inserting fingers into the private parts of his tenant's children, aged 7 and 11.
Ambrose faced a four-count charge that included allegations of sexual assault by penetration and indecent treatment of a child. The court, which convened at Shagari estate, Ipaja, between January and June 2021, heard compelling evidence that led to Ambrose's conviction.
Judge Abiola Soladoye, delivering the verdict, emphasized that the prosecution successfully proved the case beyond reasonable doubt. She remarked that the survivors' identifications and the evidence presented painted a clear picture, exposing Ambrose as a "bare-faced liar."
Describing the landlord as a "dirty old man," Judge Soladoye detailed how Ambrose, under the guise of assisting with school assignments, had indecently touched the breasts of the survivors and inserted fingers into their private parts.
"The testimonies of the prosecution witnesses (survivors) were credible, as they cannot consent to being fingered by the landlord," the judge ruled.
In a stern sentence, Ambrose was handed double life imprisonment for counts one and two each, reflecting the severity of his actions. Additionally, counts three and four, carrying a seven-year jail term each, earned him another seven years imprisonment for each count.
"Counts one and two carry life imprisonment each; the defendant is hereby sentenced to life imprisonment on each of the count charges," Judge Soladoye declared. "In respect to counts three and four which carry seven years jail term, the defendant is hereby sentenced to seven years imprisonment on each of the count charges."
This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding the rights and well-being of children, and the legal system's commitment to holding perpetrators accountable for their heinous acts.
