More than 5000 suspected cases of Lassa Fever have been recorded in Nigeria since January 2023 which can be particularly be traced to about 28 stated.
This was contained in a statement released by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) detailing the situation of the disease in Nigeria since 2022.
According to the statement, within the current period, 197 cases were recorded as suspected cases, 8 cases confirmed, probable case 0, Death Confirmed Cases 2, Cases Fatality 25.0%.
And in 2023 Cumulative (week 1-20), 5593 cases were suspected while in 2022 Cumulative (week 20) were suspected 4726.
The statement added, “In week 20, the number of new confirmed increased from 7 in epi week 19 2023 to 8 cases. These were reported from Ondo, Taraba, Edo, Bauchi and Gombe States.
“Cumulatively from week 1 to week 20, 2023, 162 deaths have been reported with a case fatality rate (CFR) of 17.2% which is lower than the CFR for the same period in 2022 (19.8%)
“In total for 2023, 28 States have recorded at least one confirmed case across 106 Local Government Areas."
