Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State confirmed that his deputy, Philip Shaibu, possesses the constitutional right to run for the governorship position in 2024.

Obaseki clarified that while Shaibu has the freedom to pursue this political ambition, it is ultimately the decision of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to determine if he will be the party's flag bearer in the upcoming election.

Earlier this week, Deputy Governor Shaibu officially declared his intention to contest in the state's governorship election. Despite previous tensions with Obaseki, the duo has since resolved their differences, and Shaibu asserted confidently that no one could prevent him from pursuing his candidacy, expressing his determination to triumph over Obaseki's endorsed candidate.

Addressing journalists on Thursday, Governor Obaseki emphasized the amicable nature of their relationship, stating, "The relationship, as you know, has been cordial. He (Philip) wants to run for the office I currently occupy, and he is free to." Obaseki reiterated that, as a Nigerian, Shaibu possesses the constitutional right to enter the race, and no one should impede that right.

However, Obaseki made it clear that the decision regarding the PDP's flag bearer will be determined by the party itself and its members. The forthcoming governorship election will see the party's internal processes shape the final candidate who will represent them in the race. The governor's comments underscore the democratic principles guiding the selection of candidates within the party, emphasizing the importance of internal decision-making processes in shaping the political landscape.
