The Presidency and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have launched a scathing attack on former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, just hours after he announced his defection to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
El-Rufai Dumps APC, Vows to Challenge Tinubu in 2027
El-Rufai officially cut ties with the APC on Monday, citing "irreconcilable differences" with the party’s leadership. Expressing deep disappointment, he claimed the ruling party had abandoned its progressive ideals over the past two years.
Declaring his next political move, El-Rufai vowed to mobilize opposition forces against the APC in the 2027 elections. “I will focus on engaging and persuading other opposition leaders and parties to unite under a strong democratic platform to challenge the APC in all upcoming elections and by-elections,” he stated.
Presidency & APC Fire Back
Reacting swiftly, the Presidency dismissed El-Rufai’s move as driven by "inordinate ambition that is destined to fail." Meanwhile, the APC insisted that his efforts to rally opposition forces would have no real impact on President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.
The political landscape is heating up ahead of 2027, and El-Rufai’s defection is sending shockwaves through the ruling party. Will his bold move reshape Nigeria’s political future, or will the APC crush his ambitions?
