In a major escalation of the ongoing bandit wars in Nigeria’s northwest, a notorious bandit leader operating in Kaduna State has been ambushed and killed by a rival faction.
The slain leader, who adopted the name "Shekau"—in reference to the infamous Boko Haram figure—was neutralized alongside several of his key lieutenants in a retaliatory attack on March 5, 2025.
According to counterinsurgency publication Zagazola Makama, the ambush was led by a rival bandit commander known as Shumo, who sought revenge after Shekau allegedly seized his weapons and killed several of his fighters. Shumo, a native of Ragadada in Birnin Gwari LGA, Kaduna, personally led the operation that resulted in Shekau’s death.
Ambush at Narewo River: A Deadly Showdown
The deadly attack took place near the Narewo River bank in Kachia LGA, a notorious hotspot for bandit activities. Intelligence reports indicate that after the fierce confrontation, Shekau’s body—along with those of his slain men—was buried by individuals identified as Yellow Million, Baba Kusa, and an imam from Kabode village in Kachia LGA.
This violent clash highlights the deepening rivalries among bandit factions in Kaduna, where power struggles frequently result in brutal killings. With no end in sight to these conflicts, the region remains a flashpoint for lawlessness, retaliatory attacks, and shifting allegiances.
