In Ondo State, a High Court in Akure has sentenced six individuals to two years imprisonment for their involvement in violence and breach of peace in the coastal community of Ayetoro, situated in the Ilaje Local Government Area of the state.
The convicted individuals are Oluwambe Ojagbohunmi, self-proclaimed spiritual leader of the community, Victor Akinluwa, Isaac Ikuyelorimi, Lawrence Lemamu, George Eyekole, and Segun Okenla. Their arrests date back to January 11, 2018, when the police took them into custody in connection with a violent episode that occurred in the riverine community, resulting in injuries and property damage. Subsequently, the group faced a 10-count charge in court related to violence and breach of peace.
The prosecuting counsel, Mr. Babatunde Falodun, initiated the trial by bringing forth the charges, asserting that the actions of the convicts violated Section 451 of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State, 2006.
Furthermore, George Eyekole, among the convicted individuals, faced an additional charge for attempting to murder Olu Obolo during the crisis. This charge was based on an alleged incident of shooting with a gun, contravening Section 320 of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State, 2006.
The court's decision to impose a two-year prison sentence reflects the gravity of the charges brought against the individuals involved in the Ayetoro community violence. As the legal proceedings conclude, this case underscores the importance of maintaining peace and order in local communities to ensure the safety and well-being of residents.
