In Ikpeshi, Akoko-Edo local government area of Edo state, two riot policemen have lost their lives, and two others are injured following a brutal assault by a mob.
The unsettling turn of events unfolded in the aftermath of an incident involving a Toyota Hilux vehicle, part of the convoy escorting former Edo House of Assembly member Emmanuel Agbaje. The vehicle reportedly collided with a motorcycle, resulting in the tragic deaths of the rider, a woman, and her child.
According to The Nation's report, Ikpeshi youths gathered around the office of the Edo State Security Vigilance Network, where the injured policemen were taken. Overwhelming the officers, the mob subjected them to a fatal beating, leading to the untimely demise of two officers. However, vigilance members were able to rescue two other policemen, recovering their rifles in the process.
The rescued officers are currently undergoing treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Edo, while the tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the community and beyond. The Chairman of Akoko-Edo local government council, Tajudeen Alade, has strongly condemned the actions of the Ikpeshi youths. He vowed to identify, arrest, and prosecute those involved, emphasizing the need to set an example and deter other errant individuals.
Edo Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Superintendent of Police (SP) Chidi Nwabuzor, also confirmed the incident, shedding light on the gravity of the situation.
