Unthinkable Crime: Elderly Enugu Resident Remanded for Alleged Rape and Fatal Assault on Minor
In a harrowing incident in Umuagu, Inyi, Oji-River Local Government Area of Enugu State, a 70-year-old man, Mr. Anthony Mgbe, has been remanded in prison on charges of allegedly raping and murdering a 15-year-old girl. The Magistrate Court in Enugu brought forth a two-count charge against him based on the accusations made by the police.
Mr. Mgbe faces charges for "unlawful carnal knowledge of a minor, an offence contrary to Section 308 and punishable under Section 309 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 30, Vol. II, Revised laws of Enugu State of Nigeria 2004." Additionally, he is charged with "unlawful killing by having unlawful carnal knowledge of the minor which caused her to bleed to death, an offence punishable under Section 274(1) of the Criminal Code, Cap 30, Vol. II, Revised Law of Enugu State of Nigeria 2004."
The severity of the allegations prompted the magistrate court to deny bail and adjourn the case until November 22, 2023, considering the need for thorough examination and legal proceedings.
The case came to light through concerned members of the community who reported the habitual violence perpetrated by the accused against women and girls. The victims, silenced by the influence of Mr. Mgbe's children, sought protection and legal intervention from the Women Aid Collective (WACOL). In response to a petition sent by WACOL's legal team to the Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mgbe was arrested and subsequently charged.
In a statement, WACOL emphasized the importance of ensuring that the perpetrator faces the full consequences of the law. The organization stands alongside the family of the deceased in seeking justice and protection for victims of such heinous crimes. As the legal proceedings unfold, this case sheds light on the pressing need for community awareness and the protection of vulnerable individuals from violence and exploitation.
