I was jolted awake by the unusual noise emanating from the living room.
I must have dozed off thinking of the event of the previous day. Trying to get out of my bed reminded me of what had transpired between me and my dad earlier for I felt a sharp pain on my cheek obviously from the slap dad gave me.
Before now, I would have gone into the living room to find out what was really going on but I didnt care anymore. If they wished to bring down the roof of the house, it was fine by me.
I trudged to the kitchen as I got out of bed, opened the fridge for a can of water, gulped down some and moved to the veranda.Behold, Chykes beautiful car was parked in the garage. Then and then it dawned on me the reason for the jubilation. The beloved son has visited. Chyke visited only on weekends since he moved out the family house.
With the water in my hand, the noisy jubilation in the living got me ruminating on my life.A lot of thoughts raced through my mind. I needed to make my life count, I could persuade Madam Rose for the driving job that Junior made mention of? I waved the idea aside because I never had any driving experience except the little skill I had for driving dads car. At this point, I regretted not acquiring any skill while I was in school. If I had learnt skills such as barbing, phone or computer repairs, fashion or interior designing or even volunteered with a professional in any field my life wouldnt be this messy. I also wondered why people would go to university when it is crystal clear that no jobs are out there upon graduation except for those with connections. The sirens of a police car jolted my strayed mind. A Hilux vehicle drove into our compound. I saw Mr Adam Roses husband with two policemen as they alighted. At first, I felt indifferent but became apprehensive when Mr Adam pointed at my direction. Thats the idiot! Arrest him! Thief! he shouted. It is okay, Sir. We shall take it from her one of the officers.
It seemed like a dream. Could someone nudge me out of this dream? But the scenario was too true to be a dream. Before I could say Jack Robinson I was handcuffed.
The entire family dashed out of living room to find out what crime I had committed. As I was about narrating what happened amidst tear even though I could not place my finger on what I have done wrong, the policeman hushed me. He ordered me to keep silent as anything I said would be used against me in the court of law. I lowered my head in agony as my family watched helplessly. Hot tears of anguish rolled down my cheeks. Why would I be subjected to this kind of humiliation in the neighbourhood? My heart sought for answers that never came. My dad tried frantically to get the policemen disclose the offence I had committed but the effort was futile as they were hell bent on taking me to the station. If dad cared enough, he should come over to the police station to find out the offence I had committed. One of the officers told him. I was later led away by the policemen in their vehicle.
In my anguish, I peeped through the window of the van, I couldnt decipher exactly what my family felt for me at that moment: disappointment or pity?
I was confined to the four walls of that dark interrogation room with only a reflection of sunlight on my face. A female figure emerged from only God knows where before me. I could barely see her face. She introduced herself as Detective Viola. Hello Mr Richard Agu, she called me like we have met before. Her soft-spoken voice became more audible as she approached me and at that time I could see her clearer than before. Though the reflection of sunlight was making it difficult for me to see her completely.
Then the unexpected question came. How long have you been having this secret affair with Mrs Rose your neighbour? Without waiting for me to say a word, another bombshell came. And where is the two hundred and fifty thousand naira you took from her car this afternoon?
What a jaw dropping question! I could not believe the allegations levelled against me. A surge of uncontrollable anger and outburst gripped me. What? Two hundred and fifty what? An affair you said? I bellowed. Honestly, detective, I dont know what you are talking. Madam Rose is a good neighbour of ours and she offered me a ride from the bus stop today. I dont know anything about money or an affair, I defended. Inasmuch as she tried to cover up, I could see she was taken aback by my vehement defence. She scowled at me. I can only help you if you are honest with me, Richard. I could not fathom what Detective Voila wanted from me. Was she trying to make me confess to a crime I didnt commit? Hell no! She must be the biggest joker of the year.
My heart was heavy. It beats me why fate should be so cruel to me. Why should I be visited with such a slander? As if she read my mind, she drew near to where I sat, then she finally revealed to me the reason I was brought to the police station. Mr Adam was suspecting that his wife was having an extra-marital affair but never had enough evidence to nail her. He went out with his wifes car and made a withdraw of two hundred and fifty thousand which he carefully kept in the car. The money was meant for the labourers in his construction site. He claimed he could not get the money to them for had an emergency call and he left, leaving the money in the car. On his return, the money wasnt there anymore. Rose confirmed that I was the only one she gave a lift in her car, obviously that has made me a suspect. if you cooperate, I promise I would make this matter die a natural death but if you dont, I am afraid the consequence will be severe, she declared. I iterated and reiterated that I was innocent. I was ready for whatever that was going to happen since I had no skeleton in my cupboard.
A few minutes later, two police officer came into where I was. Was given an excruciating torture I could not forget in my entire life, seeking for the truth I never had. I lay on the floor with so much pain. I wished death could take me. But, something happened. I felt a pat on my back. As I looked up, it was my dad. And when our eyes me, flesh tears welled up my eyes.
