In a scathing critique of Manchester United’s defensive lapses during their 4-0 defeat by Crystal Palace, former Arsenal striker Alan Smith didn’t mince words in his assessment of Jonny Evans.
The Red Devils endured a dismal outing at Selhurst Park, conceding goals to Michael Olise, Jean-Philippe Mateta, and Tyrick Mitchell.
However, it was Mateta’s goal, where he effortlessly evaded Evans before unleashing a powerful left-footed strike, that drew Smith's ire.
In his post-match remarks, Smith criticized Evans for his passive approach in the one-on-one situation, labeling United’s defensive performance as a “car crash.”
Smith expressed disbelief at the ease with which Mateta was allowed to advance and score, highlighting the defensive vulnerabilities that plagued United throughout the match.
“It perfectly encapsulates United's woes. Defensively, it was a disaster. My heart goes out to Jonny Evans, who faced a one-on-one against an in-form striker and failed to act,” Smith remarked.
