Second only to CONMEBOL rival Brazil in terms of odds to win the World Cup, Argentina entered the competition as the favorite. The two South American rivals were seemingly destined to face off in this semifinal, but Croatia ruined the surprise by defeating Brazil on penalties in the quarterfinal. After narrowly losing to France four years ago, the 2018 finalists are aiming to advance to their second consecutive title match.

Now, Luka Modric and company will try to do the same for Lionel Messi and Argentina, who survived the Netherlands in a quarterfinal penalty shootout despite a late capitulation that almost ended their World Cup hopes.

In what may be his final FIFA World Cup, Messi is once more carrying the hopes of his country on his shoulders as he attempts to reach a peak that neither he nor his main rival Cristiano Ronaldo have succeeded in reaching.
