Former England forward Owen Hargreaves has weighed in on the 2025 Ballon d’Or race, naming Barcelona star Raphinha as a top contender alongside Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah.

Hargreaves believes that the Ballon d’Or winner could be determined by who lifts the UEFA Champions League trophy this season.

Salah’s Chances Take a Hit After Liverpool’s Champions League Exit

Liverpool’s hopes of Champions League glory came to a crushing end after a 4-1 penalty shootout loss to PSG, which could dent Mohamed Salah’s chances of winning the Ballon d’Or. However, the Egyptian forward has been sensational this season, scoring 32 goals and providing 22 assists in 41 games. He has also helped Liverpool stay at the top of the Premier League and reach the EFL Cup final.

Raphinha’s Impressive Numbers Keep Him in the Ballon d’Or Race

On the other hand, Raphinha has been outstanding for Barcelona, delivering 27 goals and 19 assists in 41 appearances across all competitions. His contributions have propelled Barcelona to the top of La Liga, the Copa del Rey semifinals, and the Champions League quarterfinals, keeping his Ballon d’Or dreams alive.

Speaking on TNT Sports, Hargreaves praised Raphinha’s performances, saying:

“You could argue, based on the numbers, that he’s in contention for the Ballon d’Or. His finishing has been out of this world. He’s been a revelation. Salah and Raphinha have similar stats, which is quite remarkable… I think right now it’s probably Mo Salah, but Raphinha is very, very close.”

With both players having exceptional seasons, the Ballon d’Or race could come down to who shines the most in the final months of the campaign. Could Raphinha overtake Salah and claim the prestigious award? Only time will tell!
