Former Liverpool man Graeme Souness said Chelsea’s signing of Enzo Fernandez is not worth £40 million.
Chelsea signed the Argentina international for a British transfer record of £106 million, and Souness slammed Chelsea owner Todd Boehly, wondering who is advising the American to spend recklessly.
He believed the Blues should have instead signed Brighton and Argentina midfielder Alexis MacAllister, who is a more experienced Premier League player than the former Benfica star.
Souness told the Daily Mail: “Can Enzo Fernandez handle the intensity of the Premier League?" We don’t know. Can he handle the big price tag? We don’t know. He is a £40m gamble at best. A young man with potential and little more
“Compare Alexis Mac Allister, his Argentina team-mate, who has played 80 games in the Premier League for Brighton and has far fewer question marks against his name.
“I’m surprised that money hasn’t gone on him [Mac Allister].
“Time will tell how all of this ends for Graham Potter, Chelsea, and Fernandez, but the signs are not great, despite that enormous outlay.”
