Tobi Amusan, the defending champion, has expressed her regret to her supporters for her loss of the women's 100-meter hurdles title to Danielle Williams of Jamaica on Thursday in a shocking victory at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico, the reigning Olympic champion, came in second with a time of 12.44 seconds, while Williams, who previously won in Beijing in 2015, came in first with a time of 12.43 seconds. Kendra Harrison of the United States took third with a time of 12.46 seconds.

Amusan, who placed sixth, and 2019 champion Nia Ali, who placed last, were never in contention.

After the race, Amusan spoke with reporters and added that she would return the following year stronger.

Despite everything she had been through in the previous few weeks, she said getting into the final was quite "a journey."

Amusan said, “I just want to say a huge thank you to those who have been supporting me through the ups and downs. Ya’ll stood by me and kept praying for me. God bless you all. I am sorry I might have let you all down, but we will definitely come back stronger.

“Yeah, it is a tough one; nobody likes to lose, but considering what I have gone through in the past couple of months, I am so grateful that I came out.”
