At the 2022 World Cup, Lionel Messi won the Golden Ball, securing his position as the competition's best player.

Messi scored seven goals while guiding Argentina to their first World Cup victory and second international championship.

Messi will take the title over any individual honors, despite missing out on the Golden Boot by one goal to Kylian Mbappe.

Prior to the competition, Messi was projected to be the winner at +550, per DraftKings Sportsbook. He created the majority of Argentina's scoring opportunities and was in charge of most of the team's scoring. His contributions helped the team win two penalty shootouts, including the one in the championship, by breaking through some formidable defensive teams. Even though this is Messi's final World Cup, he leaves the tournament as its champion and best player. He will then focus on a Champions League run with PSG.
