Cristiano Ronaldo didn't make any contact with the ball for Portugal's opening goal in their 2-0 victory over Uruguay on Monday, according to technology in the match ball used at the 2022 World Cup.

This was confirmed to ESPN by FIFA and Adidas, the ball manufacturers.

In the 54th minute, Portugal took the lead, but there was some disagreement over who scored.

Bruno Fernandes and Fernando Santos, the team's head coach, were unable to say definitively whether or not Ronaldo applied the game-winning final touch.

The goal has now been given to Fernandes because the technology in the ball demonstrates that Ronaldo's head did not make contact with the ball.

"We are able to conclusively demonstrate no contact on the ball from Cristiano Ronaldo for the game's first goal using the Connected Ball Technology housed in adidas' Al Rihla Official Match Ball in the match between Portugal and Uruguay.
The absence of a "heartbeat" in our measurements indicates that no external force on the ball could be measured. "The 500Hz IMU sensor inside the ball allows us to be highly accurate in our analysis,” read a statement from FIFA on behalf of Adidas.

The match ball can provide real-time data to match officials and also capture all the touches made by players with sensors.
