The Lagos State University (LASU) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced an indefinite strike.

The action stems from the Lagos State Government's alleged failure to implement the federal government-approved salary increment of 25% and 35% for academic staff, effective since January 2023.

In a joint statement signed by ASUU-LASU Chairperson, Prof. Ibrahim Bakare, and Secretary, Sylvester Idowu, the union expressed frustration with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's administration for not aligning with what federal universities and 18 state universities have already implemented.

The strike, backed by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) comprising ASUU, the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), was officially communicated to LASU’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, and the Lagos State Governor.

Call for Salary Harmonization

ASUU-LASU also criticized the disparity in salaries among tertiary institutions in Lagos State. According to the union, staff at the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) and Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) earn higher salaries than their counterparts at LASU.

The union revealed that the state government had previously established a committee to harmonize salaries across institutions, but its recommendations remain unimplemented.

Unified Strike Action

Contrary to claims by LASU student leaders that only ASUU is participating in the strike, the union clarified that all staff unions under JAC are fully involved.

“We understand that the state government and university management are making efforts to resolve the issue, but until a resolution is reached, the strike will continue,” the statement read.

Message to Students

The union advised LASU students not to interfere in the matter, emphasizing that the strike focuses solely on staff welfare and government commitments.

As the strike persists, academic activities at LASU remain at a standstill, awaiting meaningful intervention from the Lagos State Government.

Stay tuned for updates on this unfolding situation.
