The 64th Grammy Awards will take place just a few days from now, on April 4th, 2022, at the Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Despite the fact that the coveted award's date has shifted a few times due to an increase in the number of cases of the new Covid-19 variation known as Omricon, we now have a date and are poised to witness history being created all over again.
On November 23, 2022, the Recording Academy released the nomination list, providing music fans and artists a glimpse into the list of performers from around the world who are ready for recognition this season after years of hard work and consistency.
Although there are other Nigerian singers on the prestigious nomination list, today's spotlight is on Nigeria's Afrobeat sensation, Aodeji Balogun, better known as Wizkid, who received two nominations.
Wizkid was nominated for Best Global Music Performance alongside Femi Kuti, Burna Boy, Tems, and Angelique Kidjo, among other African superstars. Made In Lagos was also nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Global Music Album. Wizkid won his first Grammy Award in the Best Music Video category for his collaboration with singer Beyonce and her daughter Blue Ivy for the song Brown Skin Girl.
Although some doubters can't seem to get beyond the fact that it was in a collaborative category and that he wouldn't have won if it hadn't been for the collaboration,
Nonetheless, we've seen Wizkid work hard over the last year, and we're confident that the recording academy took notice of his consistency. This is why we've compiled a list of ten compelling reasons why we believe Wizkid will win both categories.
Please bear with me while I give them to you.
1. Wizkid is the first Nigerian artist to chart on both the Hot 100 and the Billboard 200. (16 weeks).
This isn't a fluke, and it only takes a G.O.A.T to pull it off. Others may have tried before, but no one has ever come close.
2. Tems' influence on the summer's official song, "Essence."
"She sounds strange," "She doesn't belong here,"
When this uncommon breed emerged into the mainstream with her song, Mr. Rebel, the minority mirrored these sentiments. In the year 2018,
However, it takes a great mind to see another great mind in the crowd, and Wizkid did just that when he decided to collaborate with things. He was sure of herself and believed in her abilities. Few artists are brave enough to work with a voice as unique as Tems'.
3. He is one of the most acclaimed painters of the twenty-first century.
Wizkid is the sole Nigerian artist on the list, as well as one of the most awarded artists of the decade. Is it possible to beat that? Although artists such as Burna Boy and Davido claim to be the best, the numbers don't support their claims.
4. Made In Lagos (#28 on the Billboard 20 chart) is the highest-charting Nigerian album of all time.
5. MIL is the first Nigerian album to debut at #1 on the Billboard World Albums chart for numerous weeks (3 weeks).
Wizkid is the first African artist to sell out London's 02 arena in under 12 minutes.
7. Wizkid is the world's tenth most awarded artist.
8. Wizkid has been dubbed "Afrobeat Giant" by the Recording Academy, putting him ahead of his competitors. The announcement was made lately on their YouTube account.
9. In just ten months, Apple Music, Audiomack, Spotify, YouTube, Boomplay, and Pandora surpassed 1 billion streams.
10. We also have reason to believe that the fact that Wizkid was considered for a nomination in the first place is proof of his talent.
