In a recent episode of the Business Untitled Podcast, Davido expressed frustration with the widespread labeling of all African music as Afrobeats, following similar sentiments from fellow artists like Wizkid, Burna Boy, and Fireboy.
The 'OBO' hitmaker highlighted the issue of artists being pigeonholed into the Afrobeats genre regardless of their diverse musical styles.
Davido emphasized that while the UK initially embraced African music, labeling it as Afrobeats, the genre was originally defined by the pioneering work of Fela Kuti. However, he argued that today, any African artist, whether they're creating R&B reminiscent of SZA or rap akin to Drake, is often categorized as Afrobeats.
Acknowledging the need for categorization in music, Davido suggested alternatives like R&B or Afropop, or even his preferred term, Afrofusion. However, he stressed the importance of recognizing the journey African music has taken to gain mainstream recognition.
The remarks from Davido add to the ongoing debate within the music industry about the labeling and classification of African music, signaling a growing demand for more nuanced categorization that respects the diversity of musical expression on the continent.
