Famotemi Toluwani Timothy, a disc jockey based in the state of Ekiti, was detained by agents from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ilorin Zonal Command, for allegedly impersonating Portable, a well-known hip-hop artist.
Wilson Uwujaren, the anti-graft agency's head of media and publicity, said in a statement on Wednesday that he was taken into custody on Thursday, September 29, 2022.
A resident of Igede-Ekiti in the Ifelodun Local Government Area of Ekiti State allegedly created the "Zazu Omolalomi Portable" Instagram account under the guise of the singer and claimed to be him.
According to the statement, investigations revealed that the suspect had communicated with one of his victims via social media, Adebayo Adedimeji Lukman, who owns a club in Offa, Kwara State.
He introduced himself as "Portable" and agreed to perform at the club in exchange for N1m, the statement said.
Adebayo reportedly transferred N790,000 into a bank account listed by the suspect after the suspect demanded that 80% of the money be paid before the event.
However, the self-styled artiste, "Portable,” did not show up at the event, which was held on February 18, 2022, and eventually blocked all means of communication with the suspect.
“The suspect will be charged in court as soon as investigations are concluded,” the statement added.
