Popular gospel singer Mercy Chinwo is currently facing backlash from Nigerians on social media for appearing at a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rally in Akwa Ibom State.

When the singer interrupted a governorship campaign rally on Tuesday in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State, to perform as an artist, many Nigerians were taken aback.

The 32-year-old singer, who recently got married, reportedly wowed the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, his wife, Martha, and thousands of other party supporters in the state with her gospel songs.

She performed a number of songs, including "See the way you love me" and "Jesus, you love me too much."

The governor exclaimed in his speech following Sister Mercy's ordination, "Sister Mercy, this is electrifying."

Twitter users have been responding to the news of her performance at the rally. Some have criticized the move, while others think she was paid for the role.

Some of the Twitter comments have been compiled below.

@EsteemKuti: But I thought she was supposed to use the gift to glorify God. What’s she doing collecting money at a political rally? She done turn burna boy
@Chrisamaechi: Abeg allows her to earn her pay. Charge them double if she can. Artists should be free to ply their trade this season. They are like printers and bus drivers. She knows that, in the end, Obi-Dience is the most important thing.
@3xtimesalady: At least Udom Emmanuel paid her appearance fee; what concerns her? She probably knows how to vote wisely.
@Silad_Chime: If you are a carpenter and are called to fix Tinubu’s table, you will charge the fee for the service and get the job done. Na work she go do. You finish, they pay you, and you wakau. Nothing attached. She doesn’t need to vote for the PDP or APC. She can actually sing for APC and PDP on the same day.
@IkennaArinze: This is a state rally to support one of their own. She was not at the presidential rally. If she believes that the PDP has done well in Akwa Ibom, she should carry on.
