Renowned celebrity food critic, Opeyemi Famakin, has opened up about a surprising reason he’s decided to keep his finances private.
The revelation came after he received an unexpected N80 million tax bill from the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS).
Famakin shared this during an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, where he discussed his financial journey as one of Nigeria's most prominent food critics.
According to Famakin, the tax authorities reached out to him within 48 hours of an interview where he disclosed details about his income. He narrated the incident, highlighting how the timing of his statement seemed to trigger the attention from LIRS.
“Just two days after I mentioned my finances, I got an email from LIRS. They billed me N80 million! I paid it though; it felt like a joke at first,” Famakin said.
The experience, however, has changed his perspective on discussing personal earnings publicly. “I’ll never talk about my finances again. Even when I told them my income was ‘allegedly,’ they insisted. But it’s fine—I’m now a proud taxpayer.”
Famakin previously stirred online reactions in 2022 when he claimed to be Nigeria’s highest-paid food critic, earning as much as N9 million during a slow week.
This encounter serves as a reminder that public statements about wealth can have real-life consequences, especially when it comes to taxes.
