Early Sunday morning, police reported that four people were shot in a hotel car park, resulting in one fatality.
The deceased, believed to be the rapper Foolio pending a medical examination, was later identified by a law firm as 26-year-old Charles Jones.
Foolio, who had been celebrating his birthday, was reportedly ambushed in the hotel car park, according to his lawyer, Lewis Fusco. The incident followed Foolio’s relocation from an Airbnb property, where authorities had asked him to leave due to exceeding occupancy limits.
In the hours leading up to the shooting, Foolio had been sharing updates about his birthday celebrations on Instagram, mentioning that police had "shut us down."
The shooting occurred around 04:40 EDT (09:40 BST), with two cars also struck by gunfire. The three other individuals injured in the incident were transported to a hospital and are in stable condition.
Foolio was a prominent figure in the music scene, with nearly a million monthly listeners on Spotify, where his top track, "Voo Doo," is particularly popular. Despite his musical success, Foolio had faced significant challenges, including multiple attempts on his life, as he mentioned in an April Instagram post. Local media noted that he was open about his gang affiliations.
