US court jails Hushpuppi, orders him to pay $1.7m to victims
Ramon Abass Olorunwa, also known as Hushpuppi, a popular Nigerian social media influencer, was sentenced to 11 years, three months in prison on Monday for fraud. The court also ordered him to pay $1.7 million in restitution to two victims.
Hushpuppi was sentenced by Justice Otis D. Wright II for participating in a conspiracy to launder money through a number of online con games and promoting a lavish, crime-funded lifestyle online.
In a statement given to the court, the US claimed that Abbas had the right to brag on social media about his opulent lifestyle, which was made possible by his participation in international fraud and money laundering conspiracies that targeted victims all over the world.
"This significant sentence is the result of years of cooperation among law enforcement in numerous countries and should send a clear warning to international fraudsters that the FBI will seek justice for victims, regardless of whether criminals operate within or outside United States borders," according to the statement.
In addition, Hushpuppi named Abba Kyari, a current Deputy Commissioner of Police, as a co-conspirator in his $1.1 million fraud when he entered a guilty plea on July 28, 2021.
The following day, on July 29, 2021, a US court granted an FBI warrant to arrest Abba Kyari, who was further implicated after his conversation with Hushpuppi was released.
