Haiti is presently contending with pervasive gang violence, marked by frequent confrontations between gangs and law enforcement.
Following the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021, gangs have gained control over substantial portions of the country, with almost 80% of the capital, Port-au-Prince, under gang influence, as reported by the Associated Press.
On Monday, Haitian police utilized tear gas to scatter hundreds of peaceful demonstrators who were urging the government to address the escalating gang violence.
