Tragic news emerged as at least 23 Nigerien soldiers were reported killed in a devastating terrorist ambush, leaving 17 others wounded.
The ambush, which occurred late Wednesday in Teguey village within the Bankilare district of Tilabery State, also resulted in the suspected abduction of approximately 34 soldiers.
The Defence Headquarters of the country confirmed the distressing incident, disclosing that 30 terrorists were neutralized during the attack. According to a spokesperson for the Defence Headquarters, the assailants, numbering over 100, launched a coordinated assault using landmines and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) along the route between Teugey village and Bankilare.
Despite the treacherous circumstances, the spokesperson praised the valor of the Nigerien forces, who exhibited remarkable resilience in repelling the attackers. The intense confrontation saw the neutralization of more than 30 enemy combatants, demonstrating the unwavering commitment of the nation's troops to defend against acts of terrorism.
The broadcast on the country's national television served as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by the brave soldiers in the ongoing battle against insurgency.
