Following a contentious debate with former President Donald Trump, President Joe Biden is facing mounting pressure from within his own party to step aside from the presidential race.

Concerns among Democrats have grown after Thursday's debate, where Biden's performance was heavily criticized and seen by some as validating Trump's accusations of incompetence.

According to NBC News, voices within the Democratic Party are advocating for Biden to withdraw, allowing the party to pivot towards a more viable candidate for the upcoming November elections. One Democratic lawmaker likened Biden's performance to that of an aging champion boxer in need of his corner to stop the fight, suggesting it may be time for Biden to exit gracefully.

Should Biden choose to step down, the path to selecting a new nominee is not straightforward. Most delegates at the Democratic National Convention are committed to supporting Biden, complicating any potential change in candidacy. Nonetheless, the idea of an open convention and the possibility of nominating a different candidate gained traction among some Democrats in the aftermath of the debate.

While there is a growing sentiment for change within the party, many Democrats remain skeptical about the feasibility of replacing Biden at this stage. Key concerns include identifying a suitable alternative who could effectively challenge Trump and unite the party behind a new leader. Polls leading up to the debate had indicated a close race between Biden and Trump, underscoring the high stakes of any decision to alter the Democratic ticket.

Reflecting on Biden's performance, David Axelrod, a prominent advisor to former President Barack Obama, highlighted the shock and concern among Democrats regarding Biden's initial presentation during the debate. Axelrod emphasized that the decision to continue or withdraw ultimately rests with Biden himself.
