In the most recent tragic incident off the North African coast, approximately 61 migrants are missing and presumed dead after their boat sank, as reported by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) on Saturday.

The IOM's Libya office stated that the large number of migrants is believed to have perished due to high waves that overwhelmed their vessel following its departure from Zuwara on Libya's northwest coast.

Survivors, numbering around 86 migrants according to reports from those who made it through, recounted the harrowing experience. Libya and Tunisia remain primary departure points for migrants embarking on perilous sea journeys with hopes of reaching Europe, often via Italy.

The victims, including women and children, predominantly hailed from Nigeria, Gambia, and other African countries, as detailed by the IOM office. Of the tragic incident's aftermath, 25 people were successfully rescued and subsequently transferred to a Libyan detention center.

The IOM, through its dedicated team, provided essential medical support, ensuring that the survivors are all in good condition, as reported by the IOM office. Flavio Di Giacomo, an IOM spokesperson, highlighted the alarming statistic that over 2,250 people lost their lives on the central Mediterranean migrant route this year. This somber figure underscores the urgent need for increased efforts to save lives at sea, reflecting the ongoing humanitarian crisis faced by migrants undertaking perilous journeys in search of safety and a better life.
